Introduction: The Open Road and the Open Bottle
If you ask an Istrian for directions, they won’t tell you to turn at the traffic light—they’ll tell you to turn at the old oak tree near the Malvazija vineyard. Our “Vinske Ceste” (Wine Roads) are the true veins of this peninsula. Forget rigid tour buses; the best way to see Istria is behind the wheel of a car (with a designated driver, of course) or on the saddle of a bike. We have hundreds of miles of signed routes that lead you through Roman ruins, medieval tunnels, and—most importantly—world-class tasting rooms.
The Northern Route: Lighthouses and Legates
Start your journey at the northernmost point, near Savudrija.
- The Legend: Visit the oldest lighthouse in the Adriatic, built in 1818, which legend says was a “love nest” for an Austrian count.
- The Sips: This area is dominated by the Degrassi and Cuj wineries, where the red “Terra Rossa” soil gives the wine a seaside salinity you won’t find anywhere else.
The Hilltop Loop: Grožnjan to Motovun
This is the “classic” Istrian drive. The roads wind up through the flysch hills of the interior.
- Grožnjan: Stop in the “Town of Artists” for a view that stretches to the sea before heading toward Oprtalj.
- The Parenzana: You’ll often drive parallel to the old Parenzana railway, now a famous cycling and hiking trail that passes through tunnels and over old stone bridges.
- Motovun: End your day in the shadow of this 277-meter-high hilltop town, home to the Tomaz and Fakin wineries.
Practical Local Tips
- The App: Download the “RoadBook for Discovery” or similar local apps; our “hidden” gems are often truly hidden down dirt tracks.
- Timing: The routes are open from March to mid-November, but the harvest in September and October is when the roads truly come alive with the scent of fermenting grapes.
- The “Kažun”: Keep an eye out for the small, circular stone huts in the fields; these are traditional tool houses and a sign you are in the heart of wine country.
