Introduction: A Hillside Secret
If Istria is a crown, Momjan is one of its most sparkling jewels. Perched on a hill with views that reach the Adriatic, this village is divided into two parts: upper Momjan, dominated by the ruins of a 13th-century castle, and lower Momjan, where the 15th-century St. Martin’s Church stands. It is widely considered the “Gateway” to the northern wine roads.
The Castle and the Culture
- Momjan Castle: The ruins oversee the terrain like a silent sentry. It’s the perfect spot for a sunset walk after a day of tasting.
- Boutique Stays: Many of the historic wine cellars here have been converted into boutique B&Bs and holiday rentals, combining ancient stone walls with high-speed Wi-Fi and modern luxuries.
The Wine: Home of the Masters
Momjan is synonymous with Kozlović, the winery that put Istrian Malvazija on the global map.
- Muscat of Momjan: This is the only place in the world where this specific, aromatic sweet wine is produced.
- The Bike-Wine Marathon: If you visit in November, don’t miss the marathon celebrating St. Martin, the patron saint of wine and wine growers.
