Introduction: A Map for the Thirsty Traveler
Istria might be small, but our wine scene is mighty. We’ve moved far beyond the “house wine in a plastic jug” era. Today, Istria is home to some of the most stunning architectural wineries in Europe. Whether you want a high-tech cellar or a dusty family barrel room, here is my curated list.
The “Big Three” of Design and Quality
- Kozlović (Momjan): The “Cathedral of Malvazija.” Their winery is a modern masterpiece tucked into a hidden valley below an old castle.
- Roxanich (Motovun): For the lovers of “natural” and orange wines. Their cellar is built into the side of the hill—very “James Bond villain,” but with better snacks.
- Meneghetti (Bale): This is where luxury meets the vine. It’s an estate that looks like it was plucked out of Tuscany and dropped into the Istrian scrub.
The Authentic Family Stops
- Coronica (Korenići): The master of Teran. No frills, just incredible liquid.
- Kabola (Momjan): Famous for their amphora-aged wines. They literally bury the wine in the ground in giant clay pots. It’s ancient history you can drink.
- Fakin (Motovun): A rising star. Their Malvazija is consistently winning gold medals, and the view of Motovun from their terrace is worth the drive alone.
Hidden Gems
I won’t list all ten here to keep our secrets safe, but keep an eye out for Matošević, Clai, and Benvenuti.
Local Tip for the Road
Most wineries require a booking, especially in the summer. Don’t just show up and expect a seat; call ahead and tell them a local sent you. And please, hire a driver—our roads are windy, and our pours are generous!
